A Stitch In Time
From past to present, a pocket watch remains a prized possession. BY JAMES MALCOLMSON
For a select group of connoisseurs, the best way to appreciate a fine timepiece is not on your wrist, but squarely in the palm of your hand. Many of the Swiss watch companies continue to cater to this ultra-traditional minority, producing a handful of exquisitely fashioned pocket watches, just as they did throughout the 19th century. From top to bottom: W.M. Sadler 18k yellow gold and brass key-wound pocket watch, circa 1818, in an open-faced, hand-engraved case, $12,000, from DeBoulle, (214) 522-2400, www.deboulle.com; Piaget Altiplano 18k white gold pocket watch, $23,000, (877) 874-2438, www.piaget.com; Corum pocket watch with hand-painted case back, $36,000, www.corumtimepieces.com; Patek Philippe 18k gold Lepine pocket watch, $28,300, from DeBoulle, (214) 522- 2400, www.deboulle.com; Blancpain Classique ultra-thin 18k pocket watch, $20,100, (877) 520-1735, www.blancpain.com; Sartorio suit, $4,250, available at Pockets Menswear, (214) 368-1167, www.pocketsmenswear.com
